Welcome Home Cartman!!!

Saturday, 12th of May!

Oreste had been waiting for today the whole week! His new motorbike, Cartman, was going to arrive at 11am and he was extremely excited.

A celebration dinner was in place!

My day started incredibly early: I got up at 5.30 to go to Billingsgate Market. Good thing I had two friends to go with me, Qun and Ale, otherwise would have been incredibly difficult to get up 🙂

I love to go to Billingsgate. The variety of fish is fantastic and the prices are a lot better than in the supermarkets. Every time I go there I have an urge of buying every single thing I see!

‘Oh…look at those clams – I can do that clam risotto that I’ve been wanting to make for a while… or Oh…fantastic monkfish…I can do that amazing Moroccan recipe with monkfish and prawns marinated in a chermoula sauce and then skewed and grilled…’

Today the winner was a fantastic 1.2kg Wild Sea Bass

As soon as I’ve seen it I knew exactly what I was going to cook:

Sea Bass in sea salt and herbs crust.

From Billingsgate to my place to clean up the fish, task that I find quite amusing! Particularly the part of scaling it: if you’re not carefull there will be flying scales all over the kitchen – eheheh

Cartman arrived at 11:30am. Oreste was thrilled!

Oreste and Cartman

Cartman is indeed a beautiful motorbike!

After a light lunch Oreste took me for my first ride! We actually had to go and pick up Leia, my scooter and Cartman’s new and little sister, from servicing and get rid of a few scratches at The London Scooter Body Shop http://thelondonscooterbodyshop.co.uk/ in Islington. This workshop is excellent and if you have a scooter I truly recommend it – Dave is the sort of person that really cares and likes what he does… and I feel Leia is in very good hands whenever she needs special attention.

My first ride in Cartman proved to be not only a wondeful experience but also very useful.

At around 19:45 I started preparing our dinner.

First thing was to prepare the crust / dough with sea salt, herbs ( a mixture of basil, parsley, rosemary and sage), flour and egg whites:

I then divided the dough in two halves, rolled it out into two similar parcels making sure the sea bass would fit in between them.

After making sure the fish was well enclosed, it went to the oven for approximately 45 minutes.

While the sea bass was cooking I prepared the balsamic vinegar sauce and the spinach.

45 minutes later the sea bass was ready….

…and our meal was served!

I decided to have it with a Vouvray Sec! I haven’t tried this specific one but knew it would go very well with white fish…and it did! The combination was perfect. As usual my favourite sommelier at Nicolas did not disappoint me 🙂

And that’s how Cartman was received by the M&M family! Welcome!

My 5 a day…or maybe not!

There’s nothing more pleasing than a good dish of pasta after a 5k evening run after work!

I’ve always been very active! But running wasn’t really my thing.

Almost 3 years ago we moved into our first own flat! We belong to the fortunate group of people whose building has its own gymnasium – and that’s when I started thinking about running!

I started by running a mere 10 minutes at about 8km/h on the treadmill and believe me…I was nearly out of breath! At this point I would think:

Not my thing – going to swim!

But then in March 2010 I decided to do my first 5k Race for Life. Training was a must. Slowly slowly 10 minutes became 20 and then 30 and then 40 and after approximately 45 minutes I was able to reach the most wanted 5k for the first time!

I did the 5k Race for life in Hyde Park on a sunny saturday morning in May with a colleague.

Joana's 5k Race for life 2010 - Hyde Park

We got to the end in 43 minutes!!!

And that’s when I got really into running!!!

Now I could run 5k everyday! And the only reason I don’t is because I participate in other gym activities: I do Pilates once a week and join the group classes when I can. I am also learning ballroom and latin american dance at The London Academy of Dance (www.thelondonacademyofdance.com) which I absolutely adore and strongly recommend!

So, I don’t run 5k a day but AT LEAST once a week, and time allowing, twice or 3 times. I can do it now under 30 minutes – my best time was just a bit more than 26 minutes. Occasionally I reach the 10k!!! I always have to be listening to the right music and at the moment my preferred speed is 10 k/h – at this speed I can keeeeeeeeeeeeeep running…just like Forrest 🙂

And there’s really nothing more pleasing than a good dish of pasta after a 5k evening run after work!

Obviously after running 5k one DOES NOT want to be cooking for a long time. So my preferred two pasta dishes after running are pretty quick to make: Spaghetti with Courgettes and Carbonara!

Carbonara

Both, as I said, are pretty quick to make, very very pleasing and most importantly MAKE ME HAPPY 🙂

You should definitely try it 😉

è per te ogni cosa che c’è…

It had been a while since we had a saturday night in…

just you and me

You wanted to go and watch a movie.

I responded

I want to cook for you

So I did!

I wanted to cook something I never have, something with at least one ingredient you love, something to surprise you!

So I did!

The main course had the ingredient you love:

Artichokes!

Crusted Hake with Artichoke puree

Beautiful and delicious dish!

I am glad I choose artichoke as your loved ingredient: the artichoke puree was absolutely superb!!!

The Hake was cooked with and accompanied by a fabulous Vernaccia di San Gimignano:

Dry, fresh and spicy!

Vernaccia di San Gimignano

For dessert I prepared something that would surprise you: Panna Cotta!

Panna Cotta with Prosecco marinated Strawberries

When is just the two of us I don’t usually make a dessert… mainly because we don’t have much of a sweet tooth!

However there’s only two desserts that you really like: Tiramisù and Panna Cotta.

I mastered the Tiramisù a while ago.

It was time to master the Panna Cotta!

So I did!!!

And because I used Prosecco to marinate the strawberries we had the dessert with a glass of it!

Prosecco di Valdobbiadene

And so I did surprise you…

And so I did surprise myself!

è per te il rosso delle fragole… è per te Oreste

Here’s to a Michelin star standard meal 🙂

Things I have fun with and like to eat and like to drink

26 Sunday Feb 2012

Back in 2010 I decided to post pictures of dishes I cooked and wine we drunk over meals on Facebook. The album is named

things I have fun with and like to eat and like to drink

I always had and have very good feedback.  But one of these days at the gym of the building we live Gulsena…made my day :). She tells me she’d seen my Facebook pictures and

they are mouthwatering and look delicious and I would love to try them!

I was over the moon!!! It didn’t take long to set up a date so Gulsena and Agnis, her husband, would join us for dinner!

I went for a menu that didn’t require last minute cooking so we could spend most of our time with our guests.

To start with and inspired in a starter we had in a Restaurant in summer 2010 in Rome I brought out 1 ingredient from the fridge and 3 from the cupboard:  ricotta, oatmeal biscuits, fig relish and honey. These 4 ingredients make up an excellent appetiser by spreading the fig relish on top of the oatmeal biscuit and then the ricotta cheese followed by a tiny bit of honey. I ♥ eating this, specially during the winter…the fig relish has a hint of cinnamon giving it a certain warmth… Trust me (!), the combination of these fours ingredients is PERFECT! I do actually need to find a name for it!!!!! Anyone wants to help???

For main course I served  a Ricotta Meatloaf prepared and cooked before Gulsena and Agnis arrived.

Ricotta Meatloaf

This recipe is great because not only is very good and tasty but also healthy and can be cooked a while before eating or the previous night. Additionally can be served both ways: warm or cold!

We opened a bottle of french red wine given to Oreste by Gulsena some days before our meal. The wine paired the food very well: smooth with some fruity notes that blended with the ricotta meatloaf flavours without obscuring them.

Mas Olivier - Faugères 2007

The highlight of our evening was the dessert: TIRAMISÙ

Joana's Tiramisù

My Tiramisù is indeed very good

and Gulsena loved it soooooo much that we got together some days after to make one together so she could learn it my way! Needless to say I was extremely proud 🙂

Our Friday night chez M&M’s was memorable and the first of many to come!!!

Thank you Gulsena! Thank you Agnis!

2012 dinner party season Chez M&M household officially opened!

30 Monday Jan 2012

My little brother turned 30 (yes I am older than him!!!) in the beginning of 2012.

To celebrate his 20+10th birthday he came over to London with his girlfriend for a long weekend.

We did go out on the day, but the night before myself and Oreste had our first dinner party in 2012…

and declared the 2012 dinner party season Chez M&M household officially opened!

I decided to introduce them to some Italian flavours drizzled by a taste of Portugal:

We started with a platter of cold meat: Prosciutto di Parma and Milano Salami accompanied by spelt bread, olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Followed by Risotto Milanese.

Risotto Milanese

I love to eat and to make this recipe. It’s easy, quick and with just a few ingredients you’ll have a happy and pleasing meal! The saffron gives it a fantastic yellow colour, that will make your eyes brighten up and an intense, yet just right, fulfilling  flavour! In Italy is often served with a piece of meat, usually cotoletta or osso buco. Personally I prefer it by itself. Simple is better!

The wine… I knew I wanted to serve the Risotto Milanese with a good Portuguese red wine. But which one? My bottleneck was what I had available at our local supermarket: a good handful from different regions. So I decided to go for a

powerfully fruity, well structured red wine with fine tannins and lasting finish.

Quinta da Rosa

Something sweet was on demand to finish our meal. Because I haven’t made any dessert and to carry on with the Italian theme I brought out from the cupboard some cantucci and Vin Santo. Vin Santo is an Italian dessert wine typical from Tuscany and is traditionally paired with cantucci – crunchy almond biscuits – also typical from Tuscany: just dunk the biscuit in the wine – Delicious!

Our dinner was followed by healthy chat, laughter and ‘tears of joy’ – we had some catch up to do – at the table, pela noite dentro!!!

A special thanks to you little brother and to the special woman that makes you happy!
